Tips for Parents

""It has been proven that successful students have caring and supportive parents. Thus, if you want your children to be successful, it is important that you involve yourself in their lives. Here are some tips to help parents become active members in their children’s lives.

  • Use car time to talk to your children. Instead of listening to music or sitting quietly, use driving time to talk to your children about school or their life.
  • Attend parent/teacher interviews. Children need to know that their parents care about their education. They may not say it, but they need their parents to attend these interviews.
  • Ask children regularly how they are doing in school. Ask if they are in any clubs or committees.
  • Check homework regularly. Parents need to ensure that their children’s homework is completed.
  • Eat at least one meal a day together. It allows the family talk time.
  • Establish regular bedtime. Try to get your children to sleep around the same time each day. Remember that students should get about 8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Make rules for the family by involving all members. Children will follow rules more if they helped make them.
  • Encourage your children to excel. Give them positive compliments regularly.
  • Set a good example. Do things that you want your children to do. If you want your children to read more, read yourself.
  • Respect your children’s opinions. Talk to them about their opinions instead of telling them you simply disagree. If you want them to respect your opinions, you must respect theirs.
  • Tell your children about your workday. They are interested in knowing what you do as much as you are interested in knowing about them.
  • Attend functions that your children are a part of. For example, attend games, plays, musicals, and other activities.
  • Give children responsibilities at home. For example, checking the mail, washing dishes, helping with dinner, etc.
  • MOST IMPORTANTLY – TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN AND ALWAYS HAVE OPEN COMMUNICATION.
